A Property Management System is the operational hub of a hotel: it holds the reservation calendar, handles arrivals and departures, assigns and tracks rooms, coordinates housekeeping, and produces guest folios and invoices. Larger properties integrate it with a booking engine, a channel manager, and payment systems.
A PMS is about running the property day to day, distinct from the booking engine (which takes the reservation) and the channel manager (which distributes inventory). Smaller independents may run lighter setups, but the operational need — knowing who's arriving and which rooms are free — is universal.
Why it matters for direct booking
A direct-booking channel sits beside a property's operations, not inside them — it is not a PMS replacement. The two are complementary: the booking website wins commission-free reservations; the PMS (or the existing process) runs the stay.
