Rate parity means the publicly visible price for a given room and date is consistent everywhere a guest might find it — the OTAs and the hotel's direct site alike. OTAs use parity clauses to ensure they're never undercut by the property they're selling. Parity comes in two flavours: "wide" (same rate across all channels) and "narrow" (the hotel can't undercut a specific OTA publicly but has more freedom elsewhere); wide parity has been curbed or banned in several markets.
Importantly, parity governs the public rate — not closed or conditional offers. Member-only rates, a small book-direct discount behind a sign-in, or added value (free breakfast, parking, late checkout) are the standard, compliant ways hotels make direct the better deal without breaking parity.
Why it matters for direct booking
Parity is why "just undercut the OTA" usually isn't an option. The winning direct-booking play is value and ownership: match the public rate, then give guests a reason to book direct (a perk or member rate) and a fast, trustworthy way to do it.
